Three kinds of work genuinely need 99.9%: catalyst systems where water poisons the active site, precision cleaning where a residue film is the defect, and analytical use where the solvent is the blank.
Much else does not. Where a 99.8% certificate already meets the limit sheet, the 99.9% premium buys nothing the finished product can show.
The upgrade calculation is simple arithmetic: yield points recovered, rework batches avoided and cleaning cycles saved, set against the price difference per kilogram. Most lines can run that comparison on one quarter of data.
If both grades are on site, keep them segregated. Blending a 99.9% lot into a 99.8% line quietly destroys the value of the tighter grade.
