Ethyl Acetate EP

EP Grade

Product Summary

Sasol lists Ethyl Acetate EP as a 99.80% mass purity product with availability in Europe. It is the pharmacopoeial route for European buyers and for export orders that arrive with an EP certificate requirement attached.

  • CAS number141-78-6
  • Limit basisPh. Eur. monograph, current edition
  • PositionEuropean pharmacopoeial use, plus export orders written against an EP certificate

Data

Grade Data

Sasol publishes the product at 99.80% mass purity. The remaining limits come from the Ph. Eur. monograph and are verified against the current edition before a lot is released.

Ph. Eur. monograph limits for ethyl acetate. Verify against the current edition of the monograph.
Property Limit
Purity (Sasol product data)99.80% mass
Relative density at 20 °C0.898–0.902
Refractive index at 20 °C1.370–1.373
Water≤0.1%
Residue on evaporation≤30 ppm
Related substances, total≤0.2%
AcidityPasses test, EP method
Sulphuric acid colour testPasses test

Limits follow the Ph. Eur. monograph and must be verified against the current edition. Sasol lists the product at 99.80% mass purity. Where a customer specification is tighter than the monograph, the customer specification governs and is printed on the order.

Pharmacopoeia

EP Route Map

Two pharmacopoeial routes lead to the same ester. What separates them sits in the test list, the bench time per lot and the language of the paperwork.

EP: European Pharmacopoeia

Test listRelative density, refractive index, water, residue on evaporation, related substances, acidity and the sulphuric acid colour test. Identity rests on the refractive index, stated as a test in its own right.
Sampling loadSmall sample volumes. One retained lot sample normally carries the whole release file, so bench time per lot stays low.
Document languageCertificate and specification sheet in English, accepted across the European Union; some destination buyers also ask for a national-language label.
Release logicRelease against the monograph, with the batch record held by the manufacturer and the certificate quoting the lot number.
Common misunderstandingThat an EP certificate also satisfies USP. It does not: the test lists are not the same, and neither are the temperatures for density.

NF / USP: United States Pharmacopoeia

Test listAssay, relative density at 25 °C, chromatographic purity, water, residue on evaporation, titratable acid, colour, methyl compounds and the sulphur colour test.
Sampling loadAssay and chromatographic purity add preparation and run time; allow more bench hours for the same lot count.
Document languageEnglish certificate in the NF/USP format, with the monograph edition named on the page.
Release logicRelease against the monograph plus the chromatographic purity result, which the assay figure alone does not cover.
Common misunderstandingThat the two monographs set the same density window. They measure at different reference temperatures, so the ranges cannot be swapped.

Handling

Handling Notes

A pharmacopoeial lot fails on contamination long before it fails on age. Four habits keep the certificate valid in your plant.

  • Sealed against moistureEthyl acetate takes up water from humid air; keep drums closed and draw through a drying line where the process is moisture-sensitive.
  • Dry sampling toolsSample with dry glass or stainless steel; a wet thief moves the water result before the laboratory has started.
  • No shared industrial linesA pharmacopoeial lot does not run through a line last used for industrial grade without cleaning validation.
  • Flammable liquid storageStore as a Class 3 flammable liquid under UN 1173, clear of ignition sources and oxidisers.

Applications

Typical Applications

European pharmacopoeial work, personal care formulas and flavour extraction, plus export orders that arrive with an EP document requirement.

Pharmacopoeial process solvent API synthesis and crystallisation Cosmetic and personal care formulas Flavour and fragrance extraction Export lots needing EP documents

If the destination market sits in the Americas, take the NF/USP grade instead. The ester is the same; the certificate and the edition named on it are not.

Packing

Packing and Delivery

Sealed packing is the default for a pharmacopoeial lot. Availability is confirmed against the region the goods are going to.

Sealed 200 L drums

Closed-head drums with intact seals, the lot number on the label and the certificate matched to that lot.

IBC and ISO tanks

Offered where the receiving site can keep the parcel sealed and the volume justifies the container.

Regional availability

Sasol lists EP grade availability in Europe; deliveries elsewhere are arranged from stock or by transfer, with the documentation route agreed per order.

Lead time outside Europe depends on stock position and transfer routing and is confirmed per order. Fill weights are calculated at a density of approx. 0.90 g/ml at 20 °C. Transport follows UN 1173, Class 3.
