Ethyl Acetate 99.8% vs 99.5%: What Changes

Between 99.5% and 99.8% the assay gap is small. The real differences sit in water, 0.10% down to 0.03%, ethanol, 0.10% down to 0.02%, and residue, 5 down to 2 mg/100 ml.

Plenty of work never notices. General cleaning, ink reduction and thinning tolerate the wider limits without a visible penalty on the line.

The tighter limits pay for themselves first on appearance-critical work.

Other work always notices. Polyurethane systems read the ethanol as well as the water, appearance parts show every residue mark, and solvent stored for months concentrates whatever was left in the drum.

After any grade change, re-check three things on the line: drying time, film appearance and the first cleaning cycle. If all three hold, the upgrade was cosmetic; if one moves, the tighter limits are doing their job.
